After years of being estranged with his mother, Sheila, it looks like Elton John has put their issues aside, as the singer wished her a happy Mother’s Day.
‘Dear Mum, Happy Mother’s Day! So happy we are back in touch. Love, Elton xo,’ the musician on his Instagram on Sunday, accompanying a photo of the mother-son duo smiling, despite the British Mother’s Day falling on March 11 earlier this year.
Elton and his mother had not spoken since 2008 after the pair had an explosive falling out, according to the Daily Mirror. The estrangement occurred when Elton’s mother refused to cut off contact with two of his oldest friends, Bob Hailey and John Reid, after he’d fallen out with them.
Last year, the 70-year-old revealed he’d mended fences with his mother, saying, ‘We are now back in touch. Out of respect for my mother’s privacy, I have always shied away from speaking publicly about our relationship,’ he added. ‘However, I can say that we are now back in touch and have been so since my mother’s 90th birthday.’
2017 has been a difficult year for the ‘Crocodile Rock’ singer after falling ill with a ‘harmful and unusual bacterial infection,’ resulting in him cancelling all of his April and May performances of his Las Vegas residency, The Million Dollar Piano, at the Colosseum at Caesers Palace.
Elton thanked his fans on Twitter for their support throughout his tough time writing, ‘Woke up to an avalanche of well wishes. Thanks to everyone for reaching out. I’m resting well and looking forward to getting back on tour.’
