Once a sanctuary, the island resting place of Princess Diana is being turned into ‘a beautiful garden.’
Her brother Earl Charles Spencer tells PEOPLE his sister’s unmarked gravestone on the grounds of the Althorp estate is being reborn.
‘Before, we left the grave unmarked because the family knew where it was,’ explains Spencer. ‘But now we’re going to have a memorial to Diana.’
The renovations are being overseen by Spencer’s wife, Countess Karen Spencer, who runs the not-for-profit organization Whole Child International. And, the 508-year-old estate will soon be open to donors for weekend stays, starting at $25,000. All money raised will go towards Whole Child.
As well as a memorial for Diana, landscapers are planting forget-me-nots and rhododendrons on the island.
‘They were Diana’s favourite flower,’ said Spencer, 52. ‘I still remember giving her some when we were children. When I was six, I gave her a white pot of blue forget-me-nots.’
Remodeling should be completed in August 2017, in time for the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death.
