The premiere of The Real Dirty Dancing. is almost upon us, and to celebrate, Channel 7 is running Season of Dirty Dancing in the build-up next week.

Kicking things off with the I Am Patrick Swayze documentary next Tuesday, fans of the ’80s classic will dive into the world of Dirty Dancing before watching the new show. 

Watched by millions in the US last month, the documentary is a tribute to the star of Dirty Dancing. 

I Am Patrick Swayze showcases the life and career of Patrick Swayze through untold stories, exclusive interviews, heartfelt home movies, and family photos.

The film explores his childhood in Texas and his enduring relationship with widow Lisa Niemi Swayze – whom he met as a teenager at his mother’s dance studio – and delves into his remarkable film career working on huge blockbuster hits like Dirty Dancing, The Outsiders and Ghost.

The film features interviews with Swayze’s friends, family and co-stars including Sam Elliott, Jennifer Grey, C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Kelly Lynch, Demi Moore and Lori Petty.

The original film, Dirty Dancing, will air on Friday the 27th of September at 8:30 pm.

For those who have never truly lived, Dirty Dancing is a tale of a summer romance between innocent 17-year-old “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) and dance teacher Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze).

Set in 1963, the two meet while Baby is holidaying at a Catskills resort, and quickly become partners in dance and love.

Watching the film is the perfect warmup to the series premiere of The Real Dirty Dancing, which airs Monday the 30th of September at 7:30 pm.

In the new TV show, eight Australian celebrities travel to the original ‘Kellerman’s Resort’ filming location in Virginia where they undergo an immersive Dirty Dancing experience, recreating memorable movie moments and learning the iconic dance routines under the guidance of choreographers Todd McKenney and Kym Johnson-Herjavec.

The list of contestants includes Anne Edmonds, Anna Heinrich, Stephanie Rice, Jessica Rowe, Hugh Sheridan, Firass Dirani, Jamie Durie and Jude Bolton.

Their ultimate goal is to be chosen to perform as Baby and Johnny in a one-off live theatre show back in Australia, where they will re-enact the film’s final ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’ dance, including the lift.
