It was the show that shot him to stardom and made him one of the highest paid TV actors of his time, but David Schwimmer has revealed he secretly hated Friends.
Opening up about the toll the hit comedy had on his personal life, David, who played geeky palaeontologist Ross, says the subsequent fame forced him into the life of a recluse.
‘It was pretty jarring and it messed with my relationship to other people in a way that took years, I think, for me to adjust to and become comfortable with,’ the 49-year-old tells The Hollywood Reporter.
‘As an actor, the way I was trained, my job was to observe life and to observe other people, so I used to walk around with my head up, really engaged and watching people. The effect of celebrity was the absolute opposite: it made me want to hide under a baseball cap and not be seen.’
While his post-Friends movie career failed to reach great heights, David – who is now married to British artist Zoe Buckman and has a five-year old daughter Chloe – says he’s been happy playing ‘the long game’.
‘I was trying to figure out: How do I be an actor in the new world? How do I do my job?’ he says. ‘It was tricky.’
