His death-defying stunts might have made him famous, but David Blaine’s latest magic trick has definitely pushed the boundaries a little too far.
The magician performed a live bullet catch in front of a crowd of 20,000 people at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last November, but it wasn’t until his Beyond Magic show aired on ABC in the US this week that he revealed the stunt had gone seriously wrong.
In the trick, Blaine attempted to fire a rifle, catching the bullet in his mouth using a metal cup that was held between his teeth with a gum shield. But the 43-year-old admitted he thought he had died when the gum shield shattered on impact, slamming the cup to the back of his throat.
“Time just started to move really slow,” he confessed while narrating the trick.
“When the bullet struck the cup, there was a high-pitched ringing in my ears and I felt an impact on the back of my throat. I was sure the bullet went right through my head and that I was dead.”
“Suddenly I became aware of the pain and it brought me back,” he continued.
“At that moment I realised that the mouth guard had shattered again, and I was alive.”
Blaine was taken to hospital with a laceration to the throat – though not before thanking the crowd in attendance.
Viewers of the show have taken to Twitter to express their disbelief at the stunt, with comments such as “David Blaine? More like David Insane!” “FFS man what are you doing!!!” and “David Blaine ain’t human, what person would attempt to catch a bullet in their mouth?”
Since his brush with death, friends and assistants have refused to help him perform the dangerous trick which he is planning on including in his upcoming world tour.
