Home & Away star Dan Ewing is many things. He’s talented, charismatic, actually kinda funny for a river boy and, obviously, he’s Australian.
You would think all this ads up to Hollywood success, but apparently it’s exactly the reason he made the heartbreaking choice to turn his back on Tinseltown. The star has opened up on his sad secret – he felt forced to abandon his dream of Hollywood stardom after he was left feeling exploited.
In an interview with news.com.au, Dan revealed he turned down a blockbuster film because they only wanted an Aussie actor who was cheap.
‘It wasn’t shooting in the US, and they were like, “We’ll offer the lead role to an Australian because we’ll get him for cheap”,’ the 31 year old explained. ‘It’s like this multimillion-dollar American studio and they were trying to rip someone off because they weren’t American.’
‘Because they were filming in another country they could technically offer me less than him,’ he said. ‘Don’t get me wrong — it’s not about the big pay packet, it’s about respect and valuing yourself as an Australian actor. We’re worth every bit as much as the other guys are.’
‘It was tough, because it would have almost certainly catapulted my career in the US, but I made a decision to value myself as a performer,’ he said.
In the meantime the actor is starring in the upcoming Aussie flick Red Billabong, here’s hoping it garners him some attention when it releases later this month. Check out the trailer below…
