While police have declared the rocker’s death a suicide by hanging, his widow believes his anti-anxiety medication may have played a significant part in the 52-year-old’s decision to end his life.

The Daily Mail reports that Cornell’s bodyguard, Martin Kirstin – the former flame of model Heidi Klum – is said to have given the musician two Ativan pills following his final concert on Wednesday night.

Although Cornell is said to have had a prescription for the anti-anxiety medicine, it is known to have the serious side effect of causing users to have suicidal thoughts.

Just 45 minutes later, Cornell’s wife Vicky called Kirsten in a panic, asking the bodyguard to check on her husband because ‘he did not sound like he [was] okay’.

Vicky says Chris admitted to taking ‘an extra Ativan or two’.

According to a police report, Kirsten came to Cornell’s room to fix his computer after the concert. At around 11:30pm, he gave Cornell two Ativan pills.

Kirsten walked to the room and knocked but got no answer – so he tried to get hotel management to open the door.

The hotel would not open the door for Kirsten since he was not registered to the room, so instead he kicked the door down himself. He found the door to the bathroom was also locked, so he kicked that door down as well.

Inside, he found Cornell slumped on the bathroom floor ‘with blood running from his mouth’ and a band around his neck.

The musician – who shot to fame as the lead singer of band Soundgarden in the 1980s’ – was found dead in a bathroom at the MGM Grand in Detroit on Wednesday night, just hours after taking to the stage with his bandmates in a performance at the Fox Theatre.

A rep for the star has said in a statement that his family members were “shocked” to learn of his unexpected passing and thanked fans for “their continuous love and loyalty.”
