Tweeting a sentimental tribute using their pet names for each other, the singer wrote: “Words are impossible, Gui Gui”

Between the years of 1975 and 1977 Cher and Gregg famously met, married, divorced, remarried, had a son and made an album together.

69-year-old Allman ‘passed away peacefully’ at his home in Savannah, Georgia on Saturday, just two months after he cancelled all tour dates for the year.

He had faced several health battles over the years.

A former alcoholic and drug addict, he contracted hepatitis C and underwent a liver transplant in 2010.

‘Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years,’ according to a statement issued on the singer’s website.

‘During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul.

Cher previously said of her former husband: ‘Nobody ever made me feel as happy as Gregory did … he’s wonderful. I don’t understand why he can’t see it. He’s the kindest, most gentle, loving husband and father. But then, he forgets and everything goes to shit.’
