Actress Carrie Fisher’s death at age 60 has devastated fans around the world, and now Star Wars executives are scrambling to work out how to manage her future absence from the mega-hit franchise, without ruining the films.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, writers are currently in crisis meetings to find a way to deal with the star’s death. Although Carrie completed filming for the next episode of the series, which premiers in December, her character, Princess Leia, was planned to have a pivotal role in the film that was to follow.
Spoiler alert! Leia has two major story lines planned for the current trilogy – reuniting with her long lost brother Luke, and confronting her son, the evil Kylo Ren, over his fall to the dark side and his brutal murder of Han Solo.
It’s unclear which of the two stories made it to film before Carrie’s shocking death, and which remains unresolved.
A number of options are on the table – including re-editing Carrie’s last performance to deal with her death, radically rewriting the planned storyline, using a digital recreation of Carrie in the next film, or even recasting the role.
