Many Australians were left shocked and outraged last night, after seeing the way a gay man was treated by his parents on hit reality show Bride and Prejudice.
Social media lit up in support for Sydney man Chris, who is to wed his American partner Grant. While Grant’s US-based parents were supportive and loving when told of the wedding plans, Chris was left visibly traumatised at the very prospect of discussing the matter with his own parents.
‘Deep down, you just want your parents to say they are proud of you. My parents haven’t,’ Chris confessed.
And it soon became clear why. Chris’ mum Yvonne is an observant Jehovah’s Witness who rejects her son’s homosexuality, effectively tearing their relationship apart. She fully blames him for their estrangement because he is gay.
‘He has caused a division between us because he’s engaged in homosexual practices. ‘I feel that my son has died – the one I really loved and knew.’
That statement sent Twitter into a meltdown with many viewers outraged she could say such a thing.
And Chris’ father Geoff is equally as hostile.
‘I think homosexuality is absolutely wrong. It makes me feel sick if I see two men together,’ he shared.
When asked if he still loved his son, Geoff replied ‘I don’t hate him’.
