Bride & Prejudice groom Chris has spoken out about the current state of his relationship with his parents, following the shocking finale to the show in which both his mother and father rejected his marriage by refusing to attend his wedding.
Chris and viewers of the show were left heartbroken as both Chris’s mother – devout Jehovah’s witness Yvonne – and his traditional father, Geoff, stayed away from his big day, with his mother sending a brutal video reiterating her refusal to be there because ‘homosexuality is… not natural – it’s actually condemned in the Bible’.
Five months on, Chris says he has spoken to his father but only had email contact with his mother since.
‘I’ve had a brief conversation with my dad after we did some media,’ he told news.com.au. ‘And the gist of that conversation was he was proud of the fact we weren’t sensationalising anything that happened and weren’t embellishing and trying to be true. And given the opportunity, if we were ever up that way (in Queensland), he would take the time to meet Grant.
‘In relation to my mum, I have only heard from her via email where she basically sent me a transcript of what was in the video because she was worried the video would be edited to make her look unfavourable.’
Despite his devastation that his parents prioritised their beliefs over their own son’s happiness, Chris says he was still upset to read the scathing comments made about his parents on social media by the show’s viewers.
‘Obviously you’re naturally protective of your family so when people do lash out it’s hurtful,’ he told the site. ‘However, on the flip side, they don’t know my parents and it’s a human reaction they’re having. They don’t see all the good qualities my parents do have.’
Chris says his intentions were never for people to look badly at his parents, who he still speaks kindly of, despite their treatment of him. And he adds that he hasn’t ruled out the chance of a full reconciliation with his parents, although he says it will be a while before he ‘extends the olive branch’.
