While Bride & Prejudice couple Chris and Grant enjoyed a wedding to remember in Palm Springs, surrounded by friends and family, two very important people weren’t there – despite being given air tickets.
The decision of Chris’ parents Yvonne and Geoff not to attend the wedding has seen them widely slated on social media, but the strictly religious mum held her nerve. Delivering a tearful message via video, it was clear that despite the perception of some viewers throughout the series, she was not emotionally unaffected by her son’s situation.
‘It’s just mum talking to you today because dad has found this a little bit overwhelming,’ Yvonne said in the controversial video message.
‘Just as you are hurting, so are we. I’m really sorry if you thought you weren’t loved or that we weren’t proud of you as a young boy. I thought I knew you. I felt very close to you at that time.
‘But now, Chris, you really are about to do something that we find very, very hard to accept.
‘And that is to actually have a wedding ceremony. I hold marriage very sacred so I can’t give you that acceptance or be part of that part of your life. That part of your life is just not compatible with ours.
‘I know a lot of people today think (our views) are outdated and old-fashioned, but they are something that we value and hold dearly.
‘But your life is yours to live as you see fit. We want you to know that we do love you. And we want you to keep well. And that’s really all I’ve got to say at this stage.’
The statement left Chris devastated, with the popular TV favourite saying, ‘I didn’t need to see that.’
