The controversy continues to bubble away on Bride and Prejudice and after last night’s episode, Marina and Donny are in the centre of it.
The issue Marina and Donny face is that Marina’s mother, Natalia, who was born in the Ukranian, doesn’t approve of her daughter marrying an Indian man.
Natalia asked Marina is she was willing to ‘have kids who aren’t white.’
Another issue Natalia has is whether Marina would be treated differently by Donny once the couple were married, as Natalia believes Indian men change once they are married.
‘Indian men behaviour changes after marriage – (and) not for the best. For the worst,’ Natalia explained. ‘Just respect. “Because this is my wife,” whatever. Taking (their) wife for granted. ‘You are my wife now.’ No ‘hello darling’. No kissing. No jewellery. Just, “Bring me this. Bring me that.’
Marina, affected by her mother’s comments, felt torn about choosing Donny, her partner of two years or cutting all ties with her mother.
As soon as Donny heard about Natalia’s comments, he confronted her, asking if her issue with him was the colour of his skin.
‘I had my concerns when you first started dating my daughter. Basically, arranged marriages was my biggest concern,’ Natalia explained. ‘My last concern was Indian husbands after marriage, they change their behaviour towards their wives. Treating them like servants. Becoming narcissistic. I just thought, what do you think about it?’
Next, Donny addressed whether Natalia would really have an issue if her grandchildren had dark skin.
‘Marina told me about this concern about your grandchildren, that’s when I was like, “Whoa really?” That’s too much for me,’ Donny admitted. ‘And it was at that moment I certainly doubted my relationship with Marina. I don’t really want my kids coming into an atmosphere like that. Being concerned or being worried about things.’
Natalia didn’t hold back when she responded.
‘Yes, I do worry and I think if it happens it will break our hearts.’
After this comment, Natalia asked to stop filming, leaving the audience unsure if she will attend their wedding.
