Bride and Prejudice has showcased a handful of couples in Australia whose parents do not support their plans for marriage.
Gay couple Chris and Grant have arguably had the most interest from viewers largely due to Chris’s turbulent relationship with his conservative parents. Chris’s mother Yvonne is a strict Jehovah’s Witness and Chris father, Geoff, while not religious, has strong feelings against homosexuality. With their lack of support and ultimate distaste for Chris’s life choices they turn down his invitation his impending wedding and also decline to meet his fiancé Grant in earlier episodes, leading Chris to struggle through a barrage of emotions.
Luckily Grant, Chris’s partner of three years, has been the rock that’s kept him grounded and showered with love – and that’s the real reason he has been able to cope with his mother and father’s betrayal of their emotional responsibilities to their son.
‘He has been amazing. Grant understands the relationship I’ve had with my family over the years,’ Chris gushes to New Idea. ‘Grant knew all that was going on and he’s been super, super supportive and anything I’ve needed, he’s been there throughout it all.’
Chris also reveals he feels devastated his parents refused to meet the man he loves – feeling the betrayal very deeply.
‘The worst thing is, my parents refuse to meet him and they don’t even know him. I would be pissed off if that was me but Grant took it really well, he just said it was there loss and he wouldn’t let it impact him,’ Chris, 39, explains. ‘I think my dad and Grant would get on so well. They both have a wicked sense of humour and if my parents could get past the gay thing, I think they would really come to love Grant a lot.’
Before the show aired, Chris had no idea if they would be received well by Australian audiences so to be embraced by the nation wholeheartedly has left the loved up couple completely blown away.
‘I’ve been really overwhelmed by the amount of positive support that Grant and I have received,’ Chris describes. ‘When you put yourself in this type of position you’re vulnerable and you’ve got your feelings out there for the whole world to see. You’re hoping the response will be positive but your biggest fear is there will be people out there that don’t agree with you. Everything has been overwhelmingly good so far. I’ve been looking through everything on social media, looking at the Bride and Prejudice hash tag and the support there has been overwhelming.’
Chris is still holding out hope that his mother and father will attend his wedding in Palm Springs.
