Aussie Olympic star Grant Hackett has been arrested on the Gold Coast, after a terrifying incident at his parent’s Mermaid Waters home.
The former swimmer is reported to be in the Southport watch house, with his father Nev telling the Courier Mail that the arrest relates to ‘mental health issues’. The star was seen cuffed in TV vision aired of his transportation.
Sources further told the Gold Coast Bulletin that the star ‘flew into an uncontrollable rage’ after drinking heavily. The swimmer’s rather Nev was quoted by the paper as saying that his son ‘had a mental breakdown’.
Onlookers have reportedly described Grant as ‘going off’ and stabbing a knife violently into a chopping block. No one was harmed during the incident, with eight officers involved in his arrest.
‘Grant’s got a medical problem and it manifested itself here this morning … he was raving and ranting a bit,’ Nev told the Bulletin. ‘He’s been receiving treatment from a doctor. He’s big and powerful when he’s not happy.
‘We decided he needed some treatment but there was no way he was going to go and get treatment this morning so we called the police.
‘The only way the police can do anything under the law of the land is to arrest him for domestic violence.’
Our thoughts are with the Hackett family at this very difficult time.
