Brad Pitt has broken his silence about his bitter split with wife Angelina Jolie, liking it to “death.”
The acclaimed Hollywood actor made the shocking revelation in his first interview since Jolie filed for divorce in September last year.
Speaking with GQ, the 53-year-old admitted he was “emotionally retarded” and explained how his heavy drinking had contributed to the “self-inflicted” demise of his marriage.
“I was boozing too much. It just became a problem,” he said.
“Personally, I can’t remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn’t boozing or had a spliff or something.”
“I mean I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family. But even this last year, you know – things I wasn’t dealing with.”
Confessing that his family had been “ripped apart” by the shock separation, Pitt reveals he is now in therapy and has quit alcohol for good.
“It’s been half a year now, which is bittersweet, but I’ve got my feelings in my fingertips again,” he said.
The Fight Club star also shared his regret at spending so much time away from his six children in an effort to further his career.
“I say that as someone who’s let the work take me away. Kids are so delicate,” he said. “They absorb everything.
“They need to have their hand held and things explained. They need to be listened to.”
“When I get in that busy work mode, I’m not hearing.”
“I want to be better at that,” he added.
And as for the outcome of his ugly custody battle with Jolie?
“We’re both doing our best,” he explains.
“I heard one lawyer say,” No one wins in court – it’s just a matter of who gets hurt the worst.”
“For me, this period has really been looking at my weaknesses and failures and owning my side of the street.”
