He’s the underdog world-champion boxer who captured the nation’s hearts with his stunning victory against veteran fighter Manny Pacquiao.
But despite Jeff Horn’s meteoric overnight success, the 29-year-old former schoolteacher from Brisbane isn’t letting his new-found fame go to his head.
As he punched his way through to become the new WBO welterweight champion, there was one person in Jeff ’s mind: his childhood sweetheart of 11 years – now his wife – Jo.
Speaking to the 50,000-strong crowd directly after his stunning win at Suncorp Stadium in Queensland, the humble star announced the joyous news that Jo was pregnant with the couple’s first child.
‘This is not the best moment of my life. That moment is yet to come with my beautiful wife Joanna. She’s pregnant and having our first child,’ he revealed in an emotional speech.
And despite her husband’s brutal and bloody match against the legendary Filipino star, Jo says that it was Jeff ’s sweet, quiet nature that made her first fall in love with him more than a decade ago.
Revealing that the athlete – who took up boxing to defend himself against school bullies – was just a shy, high school bookworm when she first met him, Jo laughingly told The Courier Mail: ‘He’s still a bit of a nerd, but now Jeffrey’s the world champion.’
