Phenomenal chart success, fame, fortune and dedicated fans across the world – for close to 40 years, Grammy nominee Bonnie Tyler has enjoyed a music career most performers can only dream of.
And if her impressive résumé isn’t enough to induce envy, there’s her age-defying looks too.
At 65, the fresh-faced blonde could easily pass for a woman in her 40s.
In a frank chat with New Idea, Bonnie, who is touring Australia now, talks about her road to success and how she’s turned back time.
‘Botox!’ she says, laughing. ‘I have it twice a year. And why not? There’s nothing to it. I only have it in my forehead and around my crow’s-feet, that’s it, but it helps.’
Talking about the injectable reminds the chart-topper that she’s due for a top-up. ‘I haven’t had it since November, so I’m due again now!’ she giggles.
While most celebrities remain tight-lipped about their surgical enhancements, Bonnie prefers honesty. ‘Why lie?’ she says. ‘What difference does it make? It makes a difference to your face, but that’s it.’
That’s Bonnie. Open, down- to-earth and telling it like it is.
Releasing her debut single My! My! Honeycomb in 1976, it was It’s A Heartache in 1977 that charted worldwide, turning the songstress into a star.
Quickly the hits The Speed Of Night album, hit single Total Eclipse Of The Heart and Holding Out For A Hero, which featured on the soundtrack for the classic ’80s flick Footloose.
In 1984, she was nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
It’s her epic crowd-pleasers that continue to endure at Bonnie’s shows today.
‘The big ones – Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out For A Hero–the audience is always waiting for them,’ she says. ‘And I never get tired of singing them.
I don’t understand how some singers say they’re fed up of singing their old songs. It brings people together – what else do you want?’
