Bob Irwin: My heartbreak over my family

Steve's dad finally opens up

Sadly, veteran wildlife warrior Bob Irwin admits he ‘never sees’ beloved grandchildren Bindi and Robert, and hasn’t spoken to them in years.

Like the tragic 2006 death 
of his son Steve, it’s a loss the 77-year-old conservationist still feels – tears brimming in his eyes.

But if you ask Bob about the reported family rift with his daughter-in-law Terri, he says firmly: ‘No, I’m not goin’ there. If I had a dollar for everyone who’s asked me about that, I’d be a wealthy man today!’ Downing a cup of his favourite Bushells tea – he drinks dozens of cups a day – Bob prefers to concentrate on the future and his dreams for Bindi, 18, and Robert, 12.

‘It would be really nice to think that both of them could follow in their father’s footsteps,’ he says, wistfully. ‘Because of who they are, they have the power now to make a difference.
