Television legend Bert Newton has spoken of his immense relief – and elation – that troubled son Matthew appears to be back on track.
‘I have always prayed for a happy ending, and I think it has arrived,’ Bert says about New York-based Matthew. ‘He’s happy, he is doing good things, and that’s the most important thing. I’m overjoyed.’
Matthew, 39, moved to the US four years ago, after allegations of assault against two girlfriends, a diagnosis of mental illness and several other highly publicised incidents left his soaring career as an actor- director in tatters.
In 2010 – four years after he was accused of assaulting then-girlfriend Brooke Satchwell, which led to him losing a radio job – his fiance Rachael Taylor took out a restraining order against him after an incident in Rome. He was then sacked from The X Factor.
