Drug-ravaged and homeless former AFL favourite Ben Cousins has reportedly been written off by friends, according to a newspaper report detailing his ‘shocking’ decline.
Despite a bid by AFL chief Gillon McLachlan to fund the onetime star’s drug rehab, sources close to Cousins predict it will come to nothing, as the ex-favourite is ‘not ready’ to get the help he so desperately needs.
‘He’s not capable of going to rehab at this stage. If you’re so damaged mentally from the drug use, it won’t work,’ a friend told Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper.
‘He’ll smash through a glass door to get stuff, it’s just shocking.’
The source seemed to further suggest that others are more deserving of help.
‘Ben’s just at the top of the pyramid, underneath there’s a lot of people suffering. The mother of his kids deserve the attention, they will be getting the attention, not him.’
The onetime Brownlow medalist is currently on bail for breaching a violence restraining relating to his former partner.
