Renowned director Baz Luhrmann will be releasing a longer version of the beloved movie Australia, with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman back in the extended cut turned TV show, titled Faraway Downs.

Luhrmann is set to return to Australia for the world premiere on Saturday October, 21 at the SXSW Sydney 2023 Screen Festival.
After being in the glitz and glam of Hollywood for the past three decades, his return to Australia provides a full circle moment for the acclaimed director, who has most recently worked on global box office hit Elvis!.
“I am honoured to world premiere Faraway Downs in Australia, the place that has inspired me and my work my entire life,” Luhrmann revealed to Variety Australia.

What is Australia the movie about?
Australia gives a raw insight into what the country was like before World War II and follows British aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (played by Nicole Kidman) as she travels to Australia to claim her inherited cattle ranch, Faraway Downs.
Tensions rise over the prized patch of land and, when her husband is murdered, the Drover (Hugh Jackman) and Nullah (Brandon Walters) are the key to helping her drive 2,000 head of cattle to Darwin, to be sold to the Australian Army.
Is Australia being turned into a TV show?
Faraway Downs is the title of the 2023 TV miniseries reimagining of the movie Australia, and Luhrmann credits the success of streaming as the inspiration.
“I was inspired to re-approach my film Australia to create Faraway Downs because of the way episodic storytelling has been reinvigorated by the streaming world,” explained Luhrmann.
“With over two million feet of film from the original piece, my team and I were able to revisit anew the central themes of the work.”
