Award winning actor James Cromwell has been sentenced to a week behind bars, after refusing to pay a $375 fine he incurred at a protest.
The 77-year-old star – best known for playing Farmer Hoggett in Babe – was one of six activists arrested for causing a traffic jam while holding a sit-in at a Competitive Power Ventures natural gas site in New York State.
Although fracking is banned where the protest took place, the group argued that the carbon emissions emitted by the plant would pose an imminent threat to the local environment and were likely to accelerate climate change.
Speaking with the Times-Herald Record, Cromwell has defended his actions, explaining: “If we don’t stay together, nothing will change.”
“Power to the people.”
After previously neglecting to meet the payment deadline, Cromwell has been given an extension to pay the fine.
If he fails, he will be required to report to the Orange County jail on July 14.
