Heartbroken, overweight and lonely, I'm A Celebrity star Casey Donovan developed a disturbing addiction to online dating, fuelled by junk food binges.
In the wake of her sham six-year Internet and phone relationship with a man who did not exist – in reality she was being cruelly duped – the Australian Idol winner sank into self-loathing.
‘She was looking for love in all the wrong places,’ a friend tells New Idea. ‘She went out and had sex with total strangers she found online. It was like she needed validation after that awful catfish experience. She needed to believe somebody found her attractive.
‘When the sex left her unsatisfied she turned to junk food, gorging on bulk McDonald’s. Her car was a tip!’
The story of Casey’s catfishing hoax was broken exclusively by New Idea back in 2014. The catfish – later identified as her best friend Jade Katie Cavanagh – pretended to be a man called Campbell, and eventually persuaded the singer to have sex with her.
‘It started at 16. I’d never had a boyfriend, I was always the kid that was a bit different,’ said Casey, 28. ‘I thought someone had loved me for me, and it was hard to find out it was all a lie.’
