Burns survivor Turia Pitt has spoken of her nerves as she awaits the arrival of her first baby.
Taking to her blog, the inspirational Australian said that as her due date – in December – gets closer, more people have been asking her how she’s feeling about the birth.
‘“Are you nervous?” they’ll ask me,’ she says.
‘Yeah, of course, with any big change approaching, there’s a certain element of uncertainty.
‘And when you know that you’re going to experience pain, that can be pretty scary,’ she adds.
But Turia goes on to insist she’s not looking at it that way.
‘I’m re-framing it,’ she says. ‘It’s the same technique I use before every major surgery I have.
‘I write a list of all the bad things that could happen – it’s going to hurt, I don’t know if I can do it, what if I can’t handle the pain.
‘Then I write a list of all the good things – how grateful I am to still be here, to have a beautiful partner like Michael, and to get to experience this.
‘How cool it will be to meet my son. That one day I’ll be able to watch him surfing, diving and hanging with Michael.
‘Then I’ve got a choice how I look at it.
I could look at it in the negative way, or the empowering way.
If I look at it in the empowering way, I feel better – so that’s the way I choose.
‘So, if there’s something you’re finding hard, or maybe even a little scary, try this exercise.
‘Sit down, write out your ‘bad things’ and ‘good things’ lists and then make the choice.’
Turia went on to say a ‘mini goodbye’ to her followers.
‘I’m gonna take a bit of time off over the next month to just relax and chill with Michael (and Baby Hoskin when he gets here!).’
