The Oscars took a cringe-worthy turn when ‘Moonlight’ won Best Picture but La La Land was announced by mistake.
Nothing like this in the Academy’s 89-year history has ever happened before.
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of their film ‘Bonnie and Clyde,’ presented Best Picture but were given the wrong envelope.
Beatty looked puzzled but then Faye grabbed the envelope and read out La La Land.
In the middle of La La Land acceptance speeches, the film’s producer Jordan
Horowitz realized the embarrassing blip.
‘This is not a joke, Moonlight has won best picture,’ Horowitz said. ‘Moonlight. Best picture.”
Host Jimmy Kimmel came back on stage and confirmed a mistake had been made and that Moonlight won Best Picture.
Stunned, dumbfounded looks resulted and the La La Land stars and producers handed over their trophies to the true Moonlight winners.
‘I opened the envelope and it said “Emma Stone, La La Land” - that’s why I took such a long look at you and Faye,’ Beatty told the audience. ‘I wasn’t trying to be funny.’
