It’s no secret it’s been a tumultuous few months for Karl Stefanovic.
But after the TODAY show host came under fire this week for taking some time off amid reports of a ratings slide, his best mate Ben Fordham was quick to leap to his defence.
“Any questioning of his work ethic is completely ridiculous because work never ends for Karl,” the Channel Nine presenter told News Corp.
“I wish people would leave him alone because his family is going through a tough time and he’s still showing up for work at 5.30 every day.”
Describing his colleague as a “workaholic,” Fordham urged the Karl’s critics to lay off the father-of-three while he enjoyed a “well-earned rest.”
“Quite frankly, waking up at 3.30am for 10 years straight, as well as travelling the world for 60 Minutes and every other project Nine throws at him, I think he deserves a break.”
The radio host took to Instagram on Sunday to announce that he would be stepping into the role in the star’s absence.
“I’m returning to @thetodayshow for a week. Apologies in advance,” he captioned the snap.
But Ben’s followers didn’t hesitate to point out that Karl only recently returned from a seven-week hiatus following the breakdown of his marriage to Cassandra Thorburn in September.
“Another rest he gets more time off than school kids,” one fan wrote.
“Make up your mind @kstefanovic stay or go. Part time doesn’t cut it for viewers,” penned another.
