Ahead of his semi-final performance, he’s opened up to New Idea about how difficult those years were.
“Growing up, I experienced a lot of homelessness with my twin brother. Then we got put into the refuge system and just bounced between different foster homes,” D.Minor reveals.

“There was a period where we did go to separate foster homes and we just thought it was a temporary thing, but then a lot of time passed and I thought I’d lost him. It wasn’t until later that I got put into a short-term refuge where people came and went all the time, and one day they said someone new was coming in and it was actually my brother.”
D.Minor admits that it was an incredibly emotional moment, and the brothers have stuck by each other ever since. They even currently live together.
Of course, music has played an incredibly important part in the rapper’s life.

“Music has been an outlet to be able to express thoughts and feelings,” he reveals.
“I guess finding a positive path, it’s meaningful.
“I often say writing lyrics is like therapy – I can just chuck on my headphones and grab a pad and I can escape.”
After breaking through on AGT, D.Minor has been touched that his song and journey have resonated with so many people.
“Since appearing on AGT, my social media has blown up with people who are saying they used to be homeless or are struggling, and they say how the song has inspired them,” he says.
“Hearing their stories is really rewarding and it concretes what I do. That’s what I like about it.”
