International critics have slammed Aussie race-goers for their hard-partying behaviour at Melbourne Cup Day – where nine people were arrested and 78 were evicted from Flemington Racecourse.
Images of merry revellers lying in fields of garbage, straddling wheelie bins and making lewd gestures were seen worldwide, and the picture it paints is: Australia must have one hell of a hang-over today!
American sports site, Deadspin commented on Australia’s ability to get ‘white person drunk’.
‘It’s not until you see these photos of the Melbourne Cup, Australia’s most drunken and depraved horse racing event, that you can really understand just how out of hand the whites can get,’ the author, Bill Haisley wrote.
Meanwhile, the UK’s International Business Times also picked up on Tuesday’s antics.
‘Judging from these photos, the police must have been kept busy. Stewards had to step in to break up brawls, and several punters were carried away in ambulances,’ the website commented.
‘The Melbourne Cup is known as ‘the race that stops the nation’. Perhaps this is because revellers are so hung-over the next day that they can’t move.”
And the critics may have a point. Compared to last year's six arrests and five evictions, Victorian police arguably suffered through one of their biggest race days in years!
