Speaking to the Herald Sun, the radio star explained how she hid out with her family in Melbourne after discovering herself in ‘a very dark place’ mentally.
Sam details how the demise of her relationship, constant criticism from online trolls and her Sydney breakfast radio show taking a nose dive in ratings, all contributed to her feeling exhausted and unable to pick herself up.
‘I reached breaking point last year. I was like oh my goodness I am really, really struggling with my mental health,’’ she admits to the publication.
‘The trolls and the criticism were relentless. I just thought I am a good person, I am a wonderful friend, I am a wonderful sister and I work hard and I am grounded, I don’t understand why people are being so horrible to me.’
The former Bachelorette star credits working with a psychologist and spending time with family in Melbourne for getting her through one of her lowest points.
‘As soon as I finished radio (in late November) I spent three months in Melbourne with my friends and family, no one knew where I was,’’ she said.
‘To be honest that’s how I got through the break up (and) the work shift. I do love Melbourne, it is amazing.’
Speaking of her psychologist, Sam says:
‘I did research, I think it is really important to find the right psychologist, then I met this phenomenal, phenomenal lady and I could tell she got me straight away.
‘I started seeing her and I’ve seen her every week since. It is expensive but it is worth it. It costs me a bloody fortune.
‘It has definitely made me have a different attitude towards 2017. I am like I need to own my space, keep moving forward and try and not let the little stuff bug me.
‘Now I kind of think anyone who writes those things to me, it is actually a problem they have with themselves and not with me.’’
And while Sam has a new, positive attitude towards life, she acknologes that there are still internet trolls out there determined to push her down.
Just last week, fans described her as ‘ill’ and ‘gaunt’ after she posted a selfie to Instagram.
‘I still cop it from time to time, people are constantly talking about my weight fluctuating, how boring,’ she said.
‘It is the same cycle, sometimes I gain weight, sometimes I lose weight. Sometimes if I am eating food with a lot of sugar my face gets puffier, if I am eating really healthy and eating lean my face gets skinner. It is what it is. I don’t know what else to say about it.
‘I don’t have my public Facebook page or a public Twitter anymore, I got rid of them, because I find Instagram more manageable,’’ she said.
‘People can think what they want about me but it is my personal page and I still want to be able to be me and be able to share parts of my life with people who support me and are interested without having to cop the hate.’
And as for dating, Sam is saying a firm ‘no’ to appearing on the Bachelorette again.
‘I torture myself but I am definitely not going to torture myself that much.
‘I think I have had my fair share of dating shows. At the moment I am not dating anyone, I am not even talking to anyone, I am just sort of doing me for a little while and focussing on my work.’’
Sam is currently set to appear on celebrity Hell’s Kitchen.
