Andy Lee reveals heartbreaking secret
In a candid interview with Liz Hayes' 60 Minutes, radio and TV star Andy Lee's parents revealed that he almost died as a child.
Lee, 36, and comedy partner Hamish Blake sat down with the reporter for a story on the lasting success of the pair, but were also joined by their family and loved ones.
Lee's dad, Michael, told Hayes that his son had suffered from epiglottitis, a condition that occurs when the tissue protecting the windpipe becomes inflamed, blocking air getting to the lungs.
"We nearly lost him when he was one -he had epiglottitis," Lee's dad Michael told Hayes.
"And I did all the wrong things," Margaret Lee, the comedian's mother, said. "I tried to lie him down and took him to the doctor and he said take him straight to the Royal Children's [Hospital]."
Michael then explained that when they got to the hospital, a young Lee was taken to intensive care when he stayed for one week with "tubes down his throat".
"But they did say, another hour and we would have lost him," Margaret said.
"It's honestly the first time I'd seen Mike cry on the way home from the hospital, he said 'it was close, we nearly lost him'".
