"Prince William says Prince George absolutely loves ballet," she soon added. "I have news for you, Prince William: We'll see how long that lasts."
People were quick to take to social media to slam the host, saying her reaction was uncalled for.
"I was so disappointed to see the @GMA hosts making fun of Prince George for taking and enjoying ballet classes," tweeted one person. "These gender stereotypes - prescriptions for how we should behave - limit girls and boys... and society more broadly."
"There's nothing funny about a boy who dances. These athletes are strong and brave," another person added. "Disappointed that this is exactly what happened on @GMA and [Lara Spencer] who shamed and laughed at Prince George for taking ballet. Time for a change."
Spencer later apologised via Instagram.
“My sincere apologies for an insensitive comment I made in pop news yesterday,” she wrote on Instagram. “From ballet to anything one wants to explore in life, I say GO FOR IT. I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions. Go climb your mountain-and love every minute of it.”
